Rebus Puzzles – Brainteasers for Intellectual Strength and Emotional Wellness

I first used rebus puzzles with my tutoring students to give them a brain break. I like to structure my lessons with breaks for creativity and fun, and these types of puzzles fit the bill. I found that students really enjoyed them, even when it was difficult to discern the answer. In my own family I found that an increased desire to be on the internet needed to be met with an appropriate alternative to decrease negative reactions to limiting electronics, bust boredom, and cultivate mental strength and thinking skills.

These are important skills to have because there’s so much AI all over the place that many people are starting to believe that there’s no need to think because you can just ask AI. What kind of world do you think that will lead to if everyone has turned their brains off because they believe AI will give them all of the answers? This type of mindsets thinks that there is no need to write papers, just ask AI to do it. There is no need to have the interpersonal communication skills to have conversations with people – just ask AI how to respond and have conversations. This extends to believing that there is no need to learn a skill like how to make art, just ask AI to do it.

We’ve had an epidemic of imposters visually pretending to be someone they are not. This is called catfishing. Pretty soon we are going to have thoughtfishing when you meet someone online and you think they are so bright and innovative, then you meet them in person and find out they can hardly communicate because they were using the GPT to have conversations with you.

It’s time to pause for a moment and ask who is controlling the AI? Who has programmed the AI and what is their agenda? This is why we need our critical thinking skills in tact so that we can ask these types of questions.

Some people will choose to live in a world that is disconnected from nature, themselves, and their true nature, whereas others will not choose that path. And this leads us back to rebus puzzles. No, the puzzles won’t solve all of the problems in the world, but they will help us remember that we are problem solvers.
